We’ll be making our annual Memorial Day weekend pilgrimage to the Buffalo River this coming weekend! The weather has finally decided to cooperate in recent days. We’ve had no rain and the temps have jumped up into the mid to upper 80\\\’s. Hopefully the weather will hold out for the weekend. We plan to stay in the Wollum area which is likely to be a bit crowded. This is a popular time of year to visit and float the Buffalo. Reports from others that were floating this past weekend leads me to believe that the water will be in pretty good shape, barring any heavy rains in the next few days.I’ll add some pics when I get back home from the trip. Check back in about a week!

I wanted to create a couple of posts for those of you that might be interested in the float distances along the river. I’ll be using my trusty Buffalo National River West Trail, map which provides not only mileages, but topographic details and special points of interest. If you’re the type that enjoys knowing exactly where you’re at when you’re floating, hiking, camping or horseback riding, you’ll want to invest in these maps! They’re waterproof and tearproof so they’re very durable when you’re out and about.

</div

I’m just going to give mileages on some of the more popular floats. Mileages are approximate depending on exactly where you put in and where you take out. And just because I don’t list a lot of “points of interest” along a particular section, don’t think that you won’t enjoy the paddling! It’s beautiful the whole length of the river. It’s just that some will contain more historic sites or named bluffs and areas.

Steel Creek to Kyle’s Landing – 8 miles
Points of interest on this float

Big Bluff

Jim Bluff

Henderson House

Center Point School Site

Seamster Cabin Site

Arbaugh House

Kyle’s Landing to Erbie – 5.5 miles
Points of interest on this float

Buzzard Bluff

Gar Hole Bluff

Farmer Farmstead

Jones Farmstead

Erbie to Ozark – 5.5 miles
Points of interest on this float

Cedar Grove

Ozark to Pruitt – 2 miles (would probably want to incorporate this section into another float)
Nothing too exciting along this short stretch although the scenery is always great!

Pruitt to Hasty – 7 miles
Points of interest on this float

Welch Bluff

Little Buffalo River Inlet at Flatiron Bluff

Gray Bluff

Hasty to Carver – 4.25 miles
No points of interest listed on map for this section

Carver to Mt. Hersey – 6.75 miles (yes that HERSEY and not HERSHEY)
Points of interest on this float

Falls Bluff

Mt. Hersey to Woolum – 9 miles
Points of interest on this float

Copper Bluff

Clair Bluff

John Reddell Bluff

Cane Bluff

The Bat House (Skull Bluff)

The Narrows at Skull Bluff

This pretty much completes the mileages for the western portion of the river. I’ll create another post to cover the east portion.

</div

Now that doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time along the river, but this is the time of year when a “good float” is when you lay on a vinyl raft with a cold drink and your feet dangling in the water! Even a good thunderstorm with heavy rainfall doesn’t do much to the river this time of year because the vegetation along the hillsides drinks up so much of the runoff before it has a chance to reach the river itself.

A quick check of the Buffalo National River Hydrologic Data System shows that there hasn’t been any significant rainfall in the area in the last couple of days and the upper portions of the river are considered “very low”. If you do plan to float anytime soon, I would say your best bet is going to be anything downriver from Tyler Bend.

For a “human” reading on what the river looks like right now, I would recommend a call to Silver Hill Canoe Rental at 870-439-2372, or Buffalo River Outfitters at 800-582-2244. They’re at the river every day and can tell you exactly what to expect.

Maintaining the scenic beauty of the Buffalo National River is not something that “just happens”. There are rules and regulations that must be followed when floating the river. The rules are not meant to detract from the experience of paddling the river. They’re simply intended to keep the river clean and to keep people safe.

The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission has put together a beautiful website which clearly states the regulations needed to keep the river clean. Those rules can be found by following this link. I’ll highlight the regulations here:

Glass Containers are Prohibited – With the exception of containers used for substances that are prescribed by a licensed physician. That means NO glass soft drink or beer bottles in your canoe. This shouldn’t be a problem because you can always purchase your beverages in plastic or in cans.

Fasten Cooler Lids – In the event you should turn your canoe over, you’re likely to lose at least some of the contents you had packed in your cooler if it’s not secured properly. Wrap a “bungee” around your cooler and strap the cooler in your boat and you should be fine. While not specified in the regulations, I would recommend strapping “everything” in your boat and not just your cooler. Rod & reels don’t float very well

Attach and Use a Mesh Litter Bag – If you’ve never been to the Buffalo, you may not realize how beautiful it is. Sure, you’ll see some trash occasionally, but considering the many thousands of people that come to the river each year, it’s unusually pristine. The only way it will stay that way is if everyone does their part to keep this river clean! Carry along at least one, if not two, mesh litter bags. The canoe rental shops along the river will normally provide these for you if you’re renting their canoes, or you can usually buy them locally if you bring your own canoe or kayak. Most importantly…USE THE BAGS! When you finish a drink or have trash from a snack or meal, put it in the bag, cinch it shut and make sure it’s securely tied into the canoe. And if you smoke…., please put your cigarette butts in the bag as well. You don’t know how bad we hate to see cigarette butts floating down the river!

Use a Floating Holder for Beverages – Essentially this means that if you have a drink in the boat, (not in the cooler or trash bag), it needs to be in some kind of a container that floats so that if you should turn over or drop the beverage out of the boat, it will not sink. I think there are a lot of people that aren’t aware of this law, and I have to admit that I wasn’t aware of it until I started researching. We typically make a camping/floating trip with 50 or more people each year and I’ve never heard anyone mention this? So…regardless of whether it’s a new law or one that simply hasn’t received much attention, it’s still a LAW.

Again…use common sense and treat the river with respect by keeping it clean and everything should be fine.

The Buffalo River is a treat for young & old! Those new to the river will find it absolutely fascinating and the experienced Buffalo River visitor always looks forward to coming back. I got my first taste, (literally!) of the Buffalo River when I was probably only 6 yrs old. The memories of camping, spending time sitting in the cool water with my mom & dad, catching tadpoles and crawdads….all memories etched in my mind forever. This is one reason I want my daughter to enjoy all the river has to offer.

The river can be a formidable challenge after a good rain, but most of the time, the Buffalo is fairly tame and welcomes canoeists of all skill levels. Thats not to say you should stick your kids in a canoe and shove them off the bank waving goodbye as they float away. Navigating a canoe isn’t that hard, but for someone thats never done it before, it can be a little intimidating. That said, here are a few tips to remember before you set out for a float:

Start Slowly – If you’re not an experienced canoeist, try to put in where you’re in a slow or relatively calm pool of water.

Get to know your canoe – Once your loaded and ready to go, gently paddle out into the water and get a feel for how the canoe will react by paddling on each side.

Always carry your Personal Flotation Device, (PFD) – It’s an Arkansas law that you must carry at least one PFD for each person in the boat. If you’re not a good swimmer, I would recommend wearing your PFD while floating! Don’t worry if you think you won’t look cool by wearing it…you’ll look better than you would if you were dead!

Strap in your gear – If you’re new to canoes, you’ll soon find that these fine watercrafts aren’t quite as stable as what you may be used to. It’s recommended that you strap “everything” in the boat. Ice chests, dry bags, fishing poles etc. Theres nothing like losing your food & dry stuff within the first few minutes of the float, and have to borrow or go without for the rest of the day. (I’ve seen people turn over as they were shoving off from the bank!)

My intent isn’t to scare you, but to prepare you. Obey laws and use common sense and you will have one of the most enjoyable experiences you’ve ever had! The scenery along the river is unmatched, (be sure to place your camera in a waterproof bag & secure it), and the cool clear water is so welcoming during the middle of a hot Arkansas day.
