I can’t confess to having hiked much in the Buffalo River area. It is definitely on my list of things to do this coming fall though. My quest for exercise and some great pictures will undoubtedly lead me into the forests around the river. I’m not the type to go running off into the woods unprepared though, and I would recommend you don’t try that either. Some of those reading this blog are probably seasoned hikers, but many are not.

I’ve been reading and learning more about the trails inside the the wilderness areas as well as the trails that run along the river. If you’re unfamiliar with them , I can tell you that you will want to get this handy guide that was written by Tim Ernst. I don’t know Tim personally, but I do know that he is probably one of the foremost authorities on the Buffalo River and surrounding areas, especially when it comes to hiking. Tim has written several books about the river, as well as other fascinating Arkansas places and scenery. You’ll want to visit Tim’s online store for a great selection of books and maps.
This book, “Buffalo River Hiking Trails“, is a great resource for anyone considering a hike or backpacking in the Buffalo River area. The book covers some 37 trails, varying in length from less than a mile to over 20 miles. It covers each trail individually with lots of very detailed information,…nice, easy to read maps, as well as elevation profiles for most of the trails. Tim has taken notes and logged measurements and distances as he hiked, to give you a guide that is sure to prepare you for any of the trails. Also included are Tim’s tips on how to prepare for your hike, what the weather is generally like each month in Arkansas, as well as tips on hiking equipment.

If you’re new to the Buffalo River and are interested in hiking some of the trails, you’d be doing yourself a favor by purchasing this book. If you’ve hiked the trails, but haven’t taken a look at the book, you should check it out. You may learn of some sights and scenery that you never knew existed!
