When we get to float, we I spend probably half my time fishing and half paddling, (depending on how energetic my wife feels ) You can catch perch all day long, but the smallmouths can be a bit more of a challenge. I’ve personally had good luck fishing in the shoals where the current is a little stronger, but I’ve caught smallmouth all along the river.
Here is a pretty good video of some guys fishing for smallmouth bass on the Buffalo. It also gives you a good idea of the scenery along this beautiful river. Enjoy!

The Buffalo River supports approximately 50 different species of fish. Some of the more popular are the Smallmouth Bass, Channel Catfish & the Longear Perch. From an anglers perspective, I’d say the smallmouth bass is the most popular fish in the river. The cool, clear, free-flowing water & natural bedrock ledges, make a great habitat for the smallmouth. Smallmouths in the range of 4 to 5 lbs are not uncommon with most weighing in around 1 lb. Believe me, a 1lb smallmouth ca be a lot of fun to catch!
Perch are quite abundant along the length of the river as well. I’ve never been to the Buffalo when I couldn’t catch all the perch I wanted with a simple red & white tube jig.

The upper 1/3 of the river can dry up in the summer months, but the lower 2/3’s will “usually” have water year round. In the middle of the summer, expect to have to drag your boat in places unless there have been recent significant rainfalls.

Fishermen, (and fisher”women” ) should have a current Arkansas fishing license, which can be purchased at most sporting goods stores, some discount chains such as Wal-Mart as well as local hunting and fishing shops. They can also be obtained online through the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission.
