How The Buffalo River Got It’s Name

I have to admit that I looked around a bit online to find the answer to the question, “How did the Buffalo River get it’s name?” I either didn’t search hard enough or it just isn’t mentioned much on the internet? I’m sure the answer can be found in books about the Buffalo. I happened to find the following information on a National Geographic Buffalo River map. Read more

I get a lot of questions from people across the US and rest of the world, asking where the Buffalo River is exactly? Well….generally speaking…I tell them it is in north central Arkansas. I realize those are pretty vague directions, so I’ll use this post to explain a little better. Read more

I see quite a few people coming to this site in search of Buffalo River pictures or photographs. I actually have quite a few pictures in my collection, but the majority of them are photos taken of our crew at camp or playing in the water. Not exactly the kind of “scenic beauty” a person might be looking for! I do intend to make a trip to the River very soon to get more photos to add to this site. Read more

Maintaining the scenic beauty of the Buffalo National River is not something that “just happens”. There are rules and regulations that must be followed when floating the river. The rules are not meant to detract from the experience of paddling the river. They’re simply intended to keep the river clean and to keep people safe. Read more

Cool Morning on The Buffalo River!

The Weather Channel was reporting 58 degrees at St. Joe Arkansas when I checked it this morning. It was probably a little cooler than that an hour or two before. And typically, the town of Gilbert (a little further downriver), is one of the coolest places in Arkansas, so my guess is it could have been down in the low 50’s this morning! Not bad for the latter part of July in Arkansas! Would have been a nice morning to be camping on the river.

The Buffalo River is a treat for young & old! Those new to the river will find it absolutely fascinating and the experienced Buffalo River visitor always looks forward to coming back. I got my first taste, (literally!) of the Buffalo River when I was probably only 6 yrs old. The memories of camping, spending time sitting in the cool water with my mom & dad, catching tadpoles and crawdads….all memories etched in my mind forever. This is one reason I want my daughter to enjoy all the river has to offer. Read more

I can’t confess to having hiked much in the Buffalo River area. It is definitely on my list of things to do this coming fall though. My quest for exercise and some great pictures will undoubtedly lead me into the forests around the river. I’m not the type to go running off into the woods unprepared though, and I would recommend you don’t try that either. Some of those reading this blog are probably seasoned hikers, but many are not. Buffalo River Maps You Shouldn’t Be Without!

I ran across these maps several years ago at local sporting goods store, (which has since gone out of business). Let me assure you…if you spend any time on the Buffalo River, hiking, floating, horseback riding or camping…you will want to invest in these maps!
These are topographic maps, based on USGS data, updated and customized to meet the unique features of this area. They are printed on tear resistant waterproof material, so they’re great to have on the river! I’ve had my set for about 6 years now, and they get opened and looked at every time we go to the Buffalo. One really nice feature is that they show the mileage along the river, so you will know exactly how far you’re floating, and where you’re at. Produced by National Geographic, you know they’re high quality! Read more

What Kind Of Fish Are In The Buffalo River?
Posted on July 13, 2007
Filed Under Fishing The Buffalo River | 3 Comments
The Buffalo River supports approximately 50 different species of fish. Some of the more popular are the Smallmouth Bass, Channel Catfish & the Longear Perch. From an anglers perspective, I’d say the smallmouth bass is the most popular fish in the river. The cool, clear, free-flowing water & natural bedrock ledges, make a great habitat for the smallmouth. Smallmouths in the range of 4 to 5 lbs are not uncommon with most weighing in around 1 lb. Believe me, a 1lb smallmouth ca be a lot of fun to catch!
Perch are quite abundant along the length of the river as well. I’ve never been to the Buffalo when I couldn’t catch all the perch I wanted with a simple red & white tube jig.
The upper 1/3 of the river can dry up in the summer months, but the lower 2/3’s will “usually” have water year round. In the middle of the summer, expect to have to drag your boat in places unless there have been recent significant rainfalls.
Fishermen, (and fisher”women”
) should have a current Arkansas fishing license, which can be purchased at most sporting goods stores, some discount chains such as Wal-Mart as well as local hunting and fishing shops. They can also be obtained online through the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission.

Supplies Available Along The Buffalo River?

The beautiful Buffalo National River flows some 135 miles all total. As far as I know, there is no privately owned property that touches the river from start to finish…it’s all Federal government property.
I certainly have no problem with that, but let me tell a little story from the last time we floated the Buffalo River earlier this year. It was a pretty hot day, and several of us had decided not to float. Instead, we stayed behind and shuttled vehicles & canoe trailers for those that did float. When you stay at camp, there are certain things you can expect to do. Clean up the mess from breakfast, relax and cool your feet in the river, then start preparing dinner for everyone once they get back from floating. Read more
